Amazing amount of power for such a small machine!
I am now the proud owner of an Asus Eee PC 900 running Xandros Linux, of which I have no previous experience.
For technophobes that shy from this word "Linux", I can assure you that there is nothing to be scared of!
By opting for Linux over XP, you get the larger 20GB memory (instead of 12GB) making this a very powerful
little machine. The Wifi (b/g only - you need to look at the newer 1000 range if you want the faster n wifi)
is strong and fast. I am sitting typing this on my EEE PC now and I am a good distance from the router but
still getting 100% signal strength! Your email is Thunderbird. In the menus you can use one-click icons to
access Wikipedia, iGoogle, and a host of other useful sites. It is extremely simple to pick up and use.
I especially like the finger pad. I am not a fan of these things, and usually plug a mouse straight into a
laptop, but not with this one! You can scroll by using two fingers, and can open files and pages by tapping.
A double tap allows you to drag and drop, so the left mouse click button is never used! Open Office is
pre-installed, and is fully compatible with MS Office, for anyone who is at all unsure. There are 3 USB 2.0
ports, and these will allow the use of Flash drives, hard drives, optical drives, printers, etc. In fact, if
you choose to, you could plug a monitor into the VGA port, and a mouse and keyboar5d into the uSB's, and
instantly yu have a full desktop on your desk from this one tiny box! The card reader will take SD/MMC, and i
have tested Mini and micro SD and both work successfully. It plays all types of standard video formats, and
music, plus it can run a slideshow of your JPEG photos. Thye screen quality is good, as is the webcam, although
the frame rate is very slow. Do0n't expect to see much movement on screen when recording or online with it!
I got this machine for mobile browsing and general entertainment, and it serves the purpose perfectly. There
are a handful of simple games pre-loaded, but if games are your thing, you don't want one of these. It cannot
cope with anything too high-tech. Worth every penny (around the £200-£250 mark). I am extremely pleased with it.
Crazy horse gave the Eee PC 900 a 5 star rating:
We were a 1 PC family (my work laptop). My wife, who is used to high-speed PCs at work, was constantly moaning
about my ancient 3.6kg Toshiba laptop, so I bought her an eee PC 900 with Linux, and now we fight over using it!
It worked straight out of the box, picking up the wireless router and bluetooth mouse with no problem. I've never
seen faster downloads, even on the network at work, so I don't miss the 'n' wireless. Neither of us had ever used
Linux before, but after one Saturday afternoon trawling the many third-party web sites and blogs the interface is
so 'Windows-like' that you wouldn't know the difference.
The three best things are weight, durability and speed of boot. My wife carries it around in her handbag without
fear of damaging it. When we decided to go to the pictures last week she had booted it up and found out what was
on in less time than it took me to find the phone number of the local Odeon. When banished to the bedroom to watch
the football, I can decadently listen to the radio commentary.
The only slight downside is the battery. We get about 3 hours out of it, which might be a nuisance on a train or
plane, but with Christmas coming up we may upgrade to one of the many new batteries coming out every week. Don't hesitate
- don't give any more of your money to Bill Gates, he doesn't need it!
